(Ver. 21. 22.) And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat. LXX likewise. Concerning these houses, the prophetic psalm in the sixty-eighth chapter promises, saying: Because God will save Zion: and the cities of Judah shall be built, and they shall dwell there, and inherit it, and the seed of his servants shall possess it: and those who love his name shall dwell in it.

No longer will a nursing infant live but a few days

on Isaiah 65:20-23

Long life becomes the rule: “No longer will a nursing infant live but a few days”. The verse still counts death and the accursed, set beside Revelation 21:4, where death is no more. The curse of Deuteronomy 28:30 is reversed: “They will build houses and dwell in them”.

This site's exposition

They will build houses and dwell in them

Barnes reads the verse with 62:8-9, where foreigners no longer drink the new wine Israel labored for. Aquinas sets it beside Amos 9:14 and Ezekiel 28:26, two more promises of houses built and vineyards planted in safety. Jerome adds the psalm promise that Judah's cities will be rebuilt.

But these things are here prophesied of under the type and figure of the difference God would make between some and others of the Jews after their return out of captivity, between those that feared God and those that did not, with reproofs of the sins then found among them and promises of the blessings then in reserve for them.
