The sons of Noah who came out of the ark

on Genesis 9:18-19

The text names Ham as the father of Canaan before the story of the tent begins, and in verse 22. Three sons carry the earth, and the table of nations at 10:1 is built out of them. Canaan is the son the curse of verse 25 will fall on.

John Gill reads this as the command of verse 7 fulfilled, the earth populated again by Noah's three sons. The Hebrew verb means scattered abroad. Chapter 11 tells how the spread came about at Babel.
