on Genesis 19:4-5
Abraham had stopped asking at ten righteous. The verse gives the count another way, all the men of the city, both young and old. The demand made at the door is what the outcry of chapter 18 was about. The whole city surrounds the one house in it that had taken a stranger in.

Adam Clarke reads the demand at the door as the proof of the outcry the LORD had heard against the city in 18:20. He adds that the crime is too vile to describe. The text names it plainly and says no more.

Where are the men which came in to thee, etc. - This account justifies the character given of this depraved people in the preceding chapter, Gen 18:20, and in Gen 23:13. As their crime was the deepest disgrace to human nature, so it is too bad to be described; in the sacred text it is sufficiently marked; and the iniquity which, from these most abominable wretches, has been called Sodomy, is punished in our country with death.
