The recruiting is credited first to "the gracious hand of our God" upon them. Sherebiah comes with his sons and brothers, 18 men, and Hashabiah with Jeshaiah of Merari, 20 men. Then 220 temple servants come, whom David and the officials had appointed to assist the Levites.

John Gill places Hashabiah in the same division of Levites as Sherebiah, and he counts 38 Levites in verses 18 and 19. Verse 15 had found none. The first return had brought 74, by the count of Ezra 2:40.
