The different approaches corresponded in plan. In the case of these two other gates, however, no mention is made of a building with thirty chambers such as was found on the east side. Only one was needed, and it was assigned to the east as being the sacred quarter, and that most conveniently situated for the officiating priests.

The south gate of the outer court is measured to the pattern of the north and east. The inner court also has a gate facing south, and a hundred cubits separate the two. Gill notes that the outer court's three gates, north, east, and south, leave no west gate named.

Every gate of both courts carries the palm on its pillars. Psalm 92:12 to 13 pictures the righteous as palms planted in the courts of the LORD's house. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that this south approach matches the others in plan.

What is the meaning of this, that earlier a painting of palms was on the fronts, but now carved palms are mentioned as being on the front? In the carving of stones, indeed, the works appear to be external. But, as we have already said above, the painting of palms is a display of signs.
