O Assyrian! the rod of my anger. Not that this message was sent to him, but what is here said to him he was made to know by the event. Providence spoke it to him with a witness; and perhaps his own heart was made to whisper this to him: for God has more ways than one of speaking to sinners in his wrath, so as to vex them in his sore displeasure, Ps. ii.

That which thou hast prayed to me

Isaiah's answer confirms the prayer was heard before a word of the oracle that follows is spoken, so the long poem of verses 21 through 34 arrives as the Lord's own reply read back to the king who prayed it. The prophet is named in full, the son of Amoz, and the formula thus saith the Lord God of Israel answers Sennacherib's letter claim for claim.

Secondly, Hezekiah is addressed (2Ki 19:29-31), and a sign is given him of the promised deliverance--namely, that for two years the presence of the enemy would interrupt the peaceful pursuits of husbandry, but in the third year the people would be in circumstances to till their fields and vineyards and reap the fruits as formerly.
