turned his name to Jehoiakim
Necho makes Eliakim king and turns his name to Jehoiakim, the first of two name changes this chapter records for kings who no longer choose even that much for themselves. Jehoahaz goes to Egypt and Chronicles never brings him back into the story; Jeremiah's oracle names his fate in full, the word left to a fellow prophet to state rather than repeated here.
The record, by era
The Puritans and the Awakening1 voice
Had he trodden in the steps of his father's piety he might have reigned long and prospered; but we are told in the Kings that he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and therefore his triumphing was short and his joy but for a moment. Jehoiakim was set up by the king of Egypt, an old enemy to their land, gave what king he pleased to the kingdom and what name he pleased to the king!
