2 Chronicles 36:23

in 2 Chronicles 36

“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”

ASV

Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath Jehovah, the God of heaven, given me; and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whosoever there is among you of all his people, Jehovah his God be with him, and let him go up.

KJV

Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.

Commentary on the Bible · Written before 1832.

The Lord his God be with him - “Let the Word of the Lord be his helper, and let him go up.” - Targum. See the notes on the beginning of Ezra. Thus ends the history of a people the most fickle, the most ungrateful, and perhaps on the whole the most sinful, that ever existed on the face of the earth. But what a display does all this give of the power, justice, mercy, and long-suffering of the Lord! There was no people like this people, and no God like their God.

This site's exposition

the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus

on 2 Chronicles 36:22-23

The Hebrew Bible's last chapter turns on a pagan king: “the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia” to fulfill Jeremiah's word. The same words open Ezra 1:1-3, and Adam Clarke reads the two verses as carried from Ezra's opening.

This site's exposition

may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up

Adam Clarke cites the Targum, which reads the blessing as the Word of the LORD being his helper. He closes his notes on the book with the LORD's power, justice, mercy and patience toward His people. Isaiah 44:28 and 45:1 name Cyrus as the LORD's shepherd and anointed.

proposed

The destruction of Judah and Jerusalem is here coming on by degrees. God so ordered it to show that he has no pleasure in the ruin of sinners, but had rather they would turn and live, and therefore gives them both time and inducement to repent and waits to be gracious. The history of these reigns was more largely recorded in the last three chapters of the second of Kings.
