The idol - i. e. the Asherah (2Ki 21:7 note), which receives here (and in Eze 8:3, Eze 8:5) the somewhat unusual name of semel, which some regard as a proper name, and compare with the Greek Σεμέλη Semelē.

on 2 Chronicles 33:7-9
The image goes up in the house God named to David and Solomon as the place he would put his name for ever, the very promise of 1 Chronicles 28 and 2 Chronicles 7 turned into the site of an idol. Verse 8 restates the conditional given at the temple's dedication, the land held on condition of obedience to the law of Moses, and Manasseh's idol stands as the broken half of that condition. Verse 9 closes the parallel section: he made Judah err worse than the nations the Lord had destroyed before them, language 2 Kings 21:9 also carries.
