on 2 Chronicles 34:23-28

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says” opens both halves of her word. The judgment for generations of forsaking the LORD stands. Josiah's tender heart, his humbling, his torn clothes and his tears win a mercy inside it: “you will be gathered to your grave in peace”.

The charge is that they forsook the LORD and burned incense to other gods, the sins of Manasseh. Kings names Manasseh as the cause of the wrath that remained, 2 Kings 23:26. Matthew Henry draws from Josiah's example the call to humble oneself and seek the LORD.
