on 2 Chronicles 34:23-28

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says” opens both halves of her word. The judgment for generations of forsaking the LORD stands. Josiah's tender heart, his humbling, his torn clothes and his tears win a mercy inside it: “you will be gathered to your grave in peace”.

The curses are those of the covenant, set out in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. The book read aloud to the king now becomes the measure of the sentence. Matthew Henry notes that the decree had gone out against a people who persisted in their sin without repentance.
