5 notes on this verseProvidence had so ordered it that the Amalekites carefully preserved all that they had taken, concluding that they kept it for themselves, though really they preserved it for the right owners, so that there was nothing lacking to them; so it proved, when they concluded all was gone: so much better is God oftentimes to us than our own fears.

Only four hundred young men escape, riding off on camels. Saul had been told at 15:3 to destroy Amalek's camels with the rest, a link Clarke and Keil and Delitzsch note. David recovers everything taken, wives, sons and daughters, and the flocks become in his men's words “David’s plunder.”
