Which were in the times of Rehoboam, 1Ki 14:24, and continued in his father's reign; those he took away, either by driving them out of the land, or by putting them to death according to the law of God, Lev 20:13 even as many of them as he had knowledge of, for some remained, see 1Ki 22:46, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made; or suffered to be made, as Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijam, see 1Ki 11:7.

Asa “did what was right in the eyes of the LORD”, banishing the male shrine prostitutes that Deuteronomy 23:17-18 forbids and removing the idols. His grandmother Maacah loses her place as queen mother. Asa burns her Asherah pole in the Kidron Valley, where reformers of Judah burn such things again.

John Gill notes that some shrine prostitutes remained, and Jehoshaphat banishes the rest at 22:46. Matthew Henry reads the removal of idols his own fathers made as an effort to cut off the curse on his line. Asa began with his father's work.
