Twelve loaves of which were set every week before the ark upon the shewbread table, and the old ones taken away: now the work of these Levites was to make this shewbread, and get it ready every week to be set upon the table, and which was done not by them, but by priests; under the second temple, the family of Garmu was set over this work (a). Some Levites counted the articles whenever they were brought in or taken out, and others kept the flour, wine, oil, frankincense, and spices. Kohathites were responsible for preparing the rows of the showbread every Sabbath. The musicians were exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night.

Leviticus 24:5 to 9 orders twelve loaves set in two rows before the LORD each Sabbath and eaten by the priests. Gill notes that the Kohathites prepared the bread while the priests set it on the table. David ate this bread at Nob (1 Samuel 21:6).
