on 1 Chronicles 9:10-16

Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin are three of the twenty-four priestly courses set out in 1 Chronicles 24: Jehoiarib first, Jedaiah second, Jachin twenty-first. The returned priesthood thus takes up an order older than the exile. The Levites named through verse 16 trace back to Merari and to Asaph.

Shemaiah son of Hasshub

Shemaiah son of Hasshub, a Merarite, heads the Levites here and in Nehemiah 11:15. Hashabiah was a name that ran among the Merarites, borne by an ancestor of Ethan the singer in 1 Chronicles 6:45. Merari's line leads the list.
