3 notes on this verseIn four quarters were the porters,.... For, according to the Targum on 1Ch 9:22 there were twenty four wards: towards the east, west, north, and south; and, as the same paraphrase has it, six wards to the east, six to the west, six to the north, and six to the south.

The gatekeepers chosen for the thresholds numbered 212, and David and Samuel the seer had appointed them. Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times to serve with them for seven-day periods. The four chief gatekeepers stayed, entrusted with the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God.

Gill cites the Targum for twenty-four watches, six on each side of the house. 1 Chronicles 26:12 to 18 records how David's gatekeepers were assigned their gates by lot. Every side was watched.
