Tabernacle - This is added to explain what he means by the house of the Lord, not that tabernacle which David had set up for the ark; but that more solemn tabernacle, which Moses had made by God's express command; which in David's time was at Gibeon; in which God was worshipped until the temple was built.

The gatekeepers chosen for the thresholds numbered 212, and David and Samuel the seer had appointed them. Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times to serve with them for seven-day periods. The four chief gatekeepers stayed, entrusted with the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God.

The office passed from father to son. Wesley reads the house called the Tent as the tabernacle of Moses, which stood at Gibeon until the temple was built (1 Chronicles 16:39). The gatekeepers of the return served in their fathers' place.
