Mattithiah ... the first-born of Shallum the Korahite - This Shallum would seem to be the person mentioned in 1Ch 9:19, whose actual first-born was Zechariah 1Ch 26:2. Mattithiah may have been his eldest lineal descendant at the time here spoken of.

Some Levites counted the articles whenever they were brought in or taken out, and others kept the flour, wine, oil, frankincense, and spices. Kohathites were responsible for preparing the rows of the showbread every Sabbath. The musicians were exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night.

Barnes takes this Shallum as the Korahite of verse 19, whose firstborn in David's day was Zechariah (1 Chronicles 26:2). He reads Mattithiah as the eldest descendant of that house at the time described. The baking fell to a Levite.
