Ethan's son Azariah closes out Zerah's short branch, and the record does not carry it further, since the kingdom did not come from that line. Hezron's three sons are named next, and each opens a branch the chapter traces: Jerahmeel's at length, Ram's to David, and Chelubai's twice over.

Hezron's three sons divide the rest of the chapter. Ram's leads to David in verses 10 to 17, Caleb's fills verses 18 to 24 and 42 to 55, and Jerahmeel's verses 25 to 41. Gill notes that the Hebrew calls Caleb Chelubai here.
