Ram's line runs through Amminadab and Nahshon, a leader of Judah, to Boaz, Jesse, and David. Ruth 4:19 to 22 gives the same succession, and Matthew 1:3 to 6 carries it into the genealogy of Christ. Here David is Jesse's seventh son, while 1 Samuel 17:12 counts eight sons.

Eliab was the eldest son, the one Samuel first took for the LORD's anointed in 1 Samuel 16:6 to 7. He later rebuked David at the battle line in 1 Samuel 17:28. Wesley suggests he is the Elihu of 1 Chronicles 27:18.
