The twelve sons of Israel are named, and then Judah takes the floor for the rest of the chapter, the tribe that matters to this book. Through Perez and Hezron the roll marches straight to the point: Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse: 'and Jesse begat his first-born Eliab,' down to the seventh, and David. Around that spine cluster the wider clans: Jerahmeel's house, Caleb's house, the families of scribes at Jabez, the Kenites. Achar is remembered by his epitaph, 'the troubler of Israel.' The genealogy that Matthew and Luke will later carry to Bethlehem is already laid out here in plain columns.
