Matthew24chapter 24

Matthew 24:1-2

Jesus had just departed from the temple when the disciples pointed out its buildings, Herod's expansion faced with white stone blocks so immense that Josephus records some measuring over forty feet in length. His answer names the destruction outright, there shall not be left here one stone upon another, and Barnes reads it as fulfilled with terrible precision when Titus burned the sanctuary in AD 70 even against his own order to spare it. The saying concerns the temple structure itself rather than the retaining wall stones that still stand today, a distinction the commentators draw carefully so the prophecy is not read against the modern Western Wall.

Matthew 24:3

The mount of Olives already carried its own weight of memory, the place from which Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord depart the city (Ezek 11:23) and where Zechariah placed the Lord's feet on the day he fights for Jerusalem (Zech 14:4). Sitting there privately with his disciples, Jesus receives a compound question folded into one, when the temple falls, what will signal his coming, and what marks the end of the age. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note the disciples themselves may not have distinguished these as separate events, one reason the discourse that follows weaves near and far horizons together.

Matthew 24:4-5

Take heed that no man deceive you opens the discourse with a warning rather than a sign, and the commentators note this itself cautions against the very appetite for signs the disciples had just shown. Many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ names the danger precisely, a claimed identity rather than a claimed doctrine, and Josephus records a string of such figures in the years before AD 70. Gill reads the warning as timeless, binding on every generation that hears news of an appearing, because the deception named here works on the church's hope rather than on its fear.

Matthew 24:6-8

Wars and rumours of wars, famines, pestilences and earthquakes are named and immediately relativized, see that ye be not troubled, for the end is not yet. Jesus calls these the beginning of sorrows, the Greek odin naming a woman's birth pangs, not random catastrophe but labor pains that intensify toward a delivery rather than announce an immediate end. Barnes reads the sequence as ruling out date setting from world events, since such events belong to every age and the exposition assigns no particular war or earthquake to the timetable.

Matthew 24:9-10

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted turns from the world's convulsions to the church's own suffering, hated of all nations for my name's sake, and Acts supplies the immediate history, Stephen, James the son of Zebedee, Paul's repeated arrests. Then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another describes a fracturing within the community of disciples itself, not only pressure from outside it. Chrysostom preached this passage as proof the gospel's advance was never meant to run through comfort, since the Lord forecasts betrayal from within before he forecasts victory.

Matthew 24:11-13

Many false prophets shall rise answers the false christs of verse 5 with a homegrown counterpart, teachers arising from inside the community rather than claimants from outside it. Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold names a moral cause for spiritual decline, anomia, lawlessness, cooling devotion the way it cools any relationship under strain. He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved is read two ways by the bench, Calvin taking it of final salvation secured through endurance and Gill of temporal deliverance from the coming catastrophe, both readings held without a verdict since the text serves either horizon.

Matthew 24:14

gospel of the kingdom: This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations ties the discourse to the Great Commission that closes the book, 28:19's all nations answering this verse's own phrase. Henry reads the witness as accomplished in the apostolic generation in a real sense, Paul telling the Colossians the gospel had already gone into all the world (Col 1:6, 23), while also serving the larger and final ingathering the book's Gentile thread has tracked since the magi. Then shall the end come attaches the terminus to this preaching rather than to any prior sign, which the commentators hold as the verse's own clear condition.

Matthew 24:15

abomination of desolation: The abomination of desolation names Daniel by name, pointing the reader back to Daniel 9:27, 11:31 and 12:11, and the parenthetical whoso readeth, let him understand marks this as Matthew's own editorial aside urging the reader to Daniel's text. The bench holds several readings without a verdict: many identify a partial fulfillment in the Roman standards planted in the temple court at the city's fall in AD 70, Eusebius recording that the Jerusalem church heeded this warning and fled to Pella before the siege closed; others read a nearer type in Antiochus Epiphanes' altar in 168 BC, which Daniel's own text plainly addresses; still others hold a future abomination not yet fulfilled. The exposition names these positions and their holders and does not adjudicate between the historical and the futurist reading.

Matthew 24:16-20

Then let them which be in Judea flee into the mountains gives the sign practical urgency, immediate flight over any delay to gather possessions, not come down to take any thing out of his house, not turn back even for a coat. Eusebius records the Jerusalem believers acting on exactly this word, escaping across the Jordan to Pella before Rome's armies sealed the city. The added woe for the pregnant and nursing, and the prayer against a winter or a sabbath flight, are read plainly by Gill and Lightfoot, rabbinic law fixing the sabbath limit of travel at roughly two thousand cubits, a distance that would hinder escape rather than aid it.

Matthew 24:21-22

great tribulation: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world names an unprecedented distress, and Josephus's own account of the siege, famine driving mothers to unspeakable acts, corpses past counting, reads to many commentators as substantial fulfillment of this very verse. The bench divides honestly on scope: some hold AD 70 as the tribulation itself, others read that siege as a type answered fully only by a future and final great tribulation, and the text's own layered horizon allows either reading room. Except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved reads as mercy folded into judgment, the elect's sake naming the reason for the limit rather than the limit's cause.

Matthew 24:23-26

Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there returns to the warning of verse 5 with sharper focus, false christs and false prophets now producing great signs and wonders capable of deceiving, if it were possible, the very elect. Gill reads if it were possible as itself a mercy, naming a limit the deception cannot cross rather than granting that it might. Behold, he is in the desert or in the secret chambers names two false patterns of expectation, a wilderness deliverer and a hidden esoteric one, both refused in favor of the public appearing the next two verses describe.

Matthew 24:27-28

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west answers the desert and secret chamber claims of the previous verses directly, the Son of man's coming will be as public and as instantaneous as lightning across the whole sky, nothing a traveler could miss or a rumor could announce ahead of the fact. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together is a proverb of inevitability, judgment finding its object the way birds of prey find a corpse without fail. Commentators read the eagles two ways, a general proverb of certain judgment or a pointed reference to the Roman legions whose standards bore the eagle, converging on Jerusalem exactly where the corruption lay.

Matthew 24:29

Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun is darkened, the moon withholds her light, the stars fall, and the powers of the heavens are shaken, language drawn directly from the prophets, Isaiah 13:10 against Babylon and Joel 2:31 at Pentecost's own citation. The commentators read this cosmic vocabulary as the Bible's standing idiom for the fall of a kingdom or the shaking of an old order, not necessarily a description of literal astronomy, the same idiom Isaiah used of a single ancient empire's collapse. Whether this verse names AD 70's fall of Jerusalem's old order, a future final convulsion, or both under one prophetic lens is held as a live question rather than settled by the exposition.

Matthew 24:30-31

Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn draws directly on Daniel 7:13's one like the Son of man coming with the clouds of heaven, the title Jesus has claimed for himself since 8:20, and on Zechariah 12:10's they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and shall mourn. He shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds answers the scattering of persecution in verses 9 through 13 with a final ingathering that leaves no elect person unreached. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the trumpet against 1 Corinthians 15:52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16, the same event named from more than one angle across the New Testament.

Matthew 24:32-33

Now learn a parable of the fig tree draws a plain lesson from an ordinary sign, tender branches and new leaves announcing summer's nearness without anyone needing to be told the date. So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors applies the same logic to the signs just given, nearness read from observation rather than calculation. Some commentators have taken the fig tree itself as a figure of Israel's own history, a tradition the exposition names without asserting, since the text's own point is the method of reading a sign rather than the identity of the tree.

Matthew 24:34

Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled is the discourse's hardest verse, and the bench holds several readings rather than one. Many read genea in its ordinary sense, the generation then living, and find the sign's near horizon fulfilled within roughly forty years at Jerusalem's fall in AD 70; others read genea as race or nation, the Jewish people who will not cease to exist until every part of the prophecy is complete; still others hold that all these things reaches forward to a final generation that sees the whole sequence begin. The exposition names each reading with its holders and does not resolve the question, since the church has argued it since the earliest centuries without settling it.

Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away sets Christ's own speech above the created order itself, a claim of authority no prophet before him made for his own words rather than for the word given him to speak. Henry reads the verse as securing the discourse's certainty against every difficulty in its details, since the timing may be argued but the content will stand. The same claim underwrites every promise the Gospel makes, a word that outlasts heaven and earth cannot fail on a smaller scale.

Matthew 24:36

But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only closes the timetable question the disciples opened at verse 3, and the phrase became a Christological question the church has read two ways. Some hold this as the incarnate Son's voluntary and functional limitation, knowledge held back for the days of his humiliation the way Philippians 2 describes an emptying; others read it as a Jewish idiom for a matter God has reserved to himself, without implying any deficiency in the Son's own nature. Chrysostom preached the verse as a rebuke to date setting rather than a puzzle to solve, since the Lord names the very point where speculation should stop.

Matthew 24:37-39

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be draws the comparison not from violence or corruption but from ordinariness, eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, life carrying on exactly as before right up until the flood came, and took them all away. The point is not that the antediluvian world was wicked, though Genesis says it was, but that its people were unwarned in the midst of the ordinary until judgment arrived. Barnes reads the analogy as a warning against presuming on the delay itself, since Noah's contemporaries had the ark being built in front of them for decades and still were taken unaware.

Matthew 24:40-41

Then shall two be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left, and the next verse repeats the pattern with two women grinding at a mill, one ordinary labor shared by two people ending in two different outcomes. The commentators divide honestly on taken and left, some reading taken as gathered to safety and left as left to judgment, a rescue reading connected to 1 Thessalonians 4:17's catching up; others reading taken as seized for judgment, on the pattern of the flood sweeping people away in verse 39, and left as spared. The text itself does not specify the destination of the one taken, and the exposition holds both readings without resolving which is meant.

Matthew 24:42

Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come draws the whole discourse's practical conclusion into one imperative, watchfulness rather than calculation. Henry reads the uncertainty of the hour as itself a mercy rather than a withholding, since a fixed date known in advance would only produce careless delay followed by a scramble at the end. The command falls on the same disciples who asked for a sign at verse 3, and the answer given them is a posture rather than a further date.

Matthew 24:43-44

But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched draws a homely picture, a householder's foresight against a nighttime break in, to press the same lesson from the opposite direction, ignorance of the hour is precisely why readiness must be constant. Therefore be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh applies the picture directly, the very unexpectedness the commentators note is the point rather than an obstacle to it. Gill reads the thief image as deliberately unflattering to the event it pictures, since the coming itself is glorious even though its manner of arrival resembles a burglar's.

Matthew 24:45-47

Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season turns from watching to working, readiness measured not by idle waiting but by faithful service carried on until the master's return. Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing rewards continuance in ordinary duty over any dramatic gesture, and the reward itself, ruler over all his goods, exceeds the assignment given. Chrysostom preached this servant as the pattern for every steward of Christ's household, judged not by predicting the hour but by faithfulness found in it.

Matthew 24:48-51

But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming turns the same picture toward its opposite outcome, a servant whose unbelief in the master's return becomes the very license for cruelty, to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken. The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him reverses the servant's presumption exactly, the delay he counted on becomes the surprise that judges him, and he shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites names a severe end for a professed servant proved false. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth closes the discourse on the sixth and final sounding of this refrain in the book, always from the Lord's own lips and always reserved for those who claimed his household while abusing it.
