Luke20chapter 20

Luke 20:1-2

As he taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, the chief priests, scribes and elders together confront him with one question, by what authority doest thou these things. The plural office holders acting as one body shows the challenge is official, the temple establishment closing ranks after the cleansing of the courts the day before. The bench reads their question as itself an admission that his teaching carries a force they cannot ignore and cannot license.

Luke 20:3-4

I will also ask you one thing, Jesus answers, and puts the baptism of John to them, was it from heaven, or of men. This is not evasion but a real counter-question tied to the same issue of authority, for John's ministry and Jesus' own stand or fall together as one movement of God. The commentators note the rabbinic custom of answering a question with a question was accepted practice, so the form itself gave the priests no grounds for complaint.

Luke 20:5-6

They reasoned with themselves, saying, weighing not truth but consequence: if we say from heaven, he will ask why they did not believe John, and if we say of men, the people will stone them, for the people held John a prophet. The bench observes the trap is entirely of their own making, since the question exposes that they judge truth by popularity and safety rather than evidence. Their private debate is the Gospel's own verdict on the religious leadership Luke has been building toward since chapter 19.

Luke 20:7-8

They answered that they could not tell whence it was, a confession of feigned ignorance rather than honest doubt, and Jesus replies in kind, neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. He owes no answer to men who have already refused to answer him honestly, and the bench reads the exchange as Jesus declining to cast pearls before questioners who have shown they will not receive the truth whichever way it points. The silence is judicial, not evasive.

Luke 20:9-10

A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time, the setting drawn straight from Isaiah 5's song of the vineyard so that every hearer knows at once the vineyard is Israel and the owner is God. At the season he sent a servant for the fruit, but the husbandmen beat him and sent him away empty, the first of the prophets Israel's leaders refused and abused. The bench reads the owner's patience, going away for a long time and sending rather than seizing, as the long forbearance of God toward covenant tenants.

Luke 20:11-12

A second servant is beaten and entreated shamefully, a third wounded and cast out, the escalation matching the pattern of prophets rejected across Israel's history, the mistreatment worsening rather than improving with repetition. The bench notes the parable does not need three specific prophets named to land its point, the number three carrying the sense of repeated, sufficient warning ignored. Every servant returns empty and injured, and the owner still has not exhausted patience for violence.

Luke 20:13-14

I will send my beloved son: What shall I do, the lord of the vineyard asks himself, I will send my beloved son, it may be they will reverence him, the parable's turn from servants to son making its Christology unmistakable to every hearer who knew the Father had just called Jesus his beloved at the baptism and the transfiguration. But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, this is the heir, come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours, a plan the bench reads as chillingly rational within its own false premise, that removing the heir clears their title. Jesus tells his own coming death to the very men about to arrange it.

Luke 20:15-16

They cast him out of the vineyard and killed him, matching with precision what would happen to Jesus outside Jerusalem's walls, and he puts the sentence to his hearers themselves, what therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them. His own answer follows at once, he shall destroy those husbandmen and give the vineyard to others, a warning of judgment falling on the current leadership and the vineyard's care passing to others, which the standing rule on anti-supersessionism requires reading as a change of stewards rather than a final rejection of Israel as a people. God forbid, the hearers cry, recoiling from a verdict they suddenly see applies to them.

Luke 20:17-18

He beheld them and quoted Psalm 118:22, the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner, applying to himself a verse the crowd had just sung of him days before at the triumphal entry, so that the rejection he predicts and the vindication he claims sit in the same breath. Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder, a saying the bench reads against Isaiah 8:14-15 and Daniel 2:34-35, the stone that is both a place of stumbling now and the crushing weight of final judgment. Two ways of meeting the same stone, broken in submission or ground to powder in opposition, and no third option is offered.

Luke 20:19

The chief priests and scribes sought that same hour to lay hands on him, having perceived that he had spoken the parable against them, but they feared the people, and the fear rather than any change of heart is what stays their hand. Luke lays the motive bare, they understood the parable perfectly and hated it for being understood. The bench reads the verse as the hinge where private hostility becomes active plotting, restrained only by public opinion, which the next scheme is built to work around.

Luke 20:20-22

Unable to move openly, they send spies to feign themselves just men, hoping to trap him in his words and deliver him to the governor's authority, a new strategy built entirely on flattery, master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any. The question itself is a snare with only losing answers: is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, for a yes alienates a nationalist crowd chafing under Rome, and a no hands the governor grounds for arrest as a tax rebel. The bench notes the flattery and the trap are of one piece, praising his fearlessness in order to force him into the very corner fearlessness cannot escape.

Luke 20:23-26

Perceiving their craftiness, he asks them to shew him a penny, a denarius bearing Caesar's image and superscription, and lets their own answer, Caesar's, supply half his verdict: render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. The coin bears Caesar's image and so belongs in Caesar's economy, but man bears God's image and so belongs, whole, to God, a distinction the questioners had not thought to ask about. They could not take hold of his words before the people and marvelled at his answer, the trap sprung on no one but its makers, and the bench reads the saying as neither an endorsement of the state above God nor a retreat into private religion, but two claims held together without confusing which is ultimate.

Luke 20:27-30

Certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection, bring a case built on the Levirate law of Deuteronomy 25:5, a brother marrying his dead brother's childless widow to raise up seed. Seven brothers in succession take the same woman and each dies without children, the number chosen for maximum absurdity rather than as a report of an actual family. The bench notes the Sadducees do not believe their own hypothetical matters, they mean to make the resurrection itself look ridiculous by the tangle it supposedly produces.

Luke 20:31-33

Last of all the woman died also, and the question lands, in the resurrection whose wife of them is she, for seven had her to wife. The bench reads the question as a reductio meant to force one of two embarrassing conclusions, either resurrection life duplicates earthly marriage in an absurd tangle, or the Sadducees' denial of resurrection stands unrefuted, and Jesus is offered no third way by the question's own framing. He will in fact take a third way they did not anticipate, correcting the assumption underneath the question rather than accepting either of its offered exits.

Luke 20:34-36

The children of this world marry and are given in marriage, Jesus answers, but they which are accounted worthy to obtain the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they can die no more, being equal unto the angels and children of the resurrection. The bench is careful that this does not abolish the marriage bond as worthless but names it as belonging to the mortal order that death makes necessary for the race's continuance, an order the resurrection body no longer needs. Equal unto the angels describes a shared freedom from death and its institutions, not a loss of the particular love shared in this life, a point the exposition states honestly without settling every pastoral question it raises.

Luke 20:37-38

Even Moses shewed at the bush that the dead are raised, calling the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, Exodus 3:6 argued from the very books the Sadducees alone accepted as Scripture, since they rejected the prophets and writings as authoritative. The argument turns on the tense: for he is not a God of the dead, but of the living, for all live unto him, so the covenant formula spoken centuries after the patriarchs' deaths only makes sense if they still live to God. The bench notes the rabbinic method of argument, resting an entire case on the present tense of one verb, was itself a recognized form of proof among Jewish teachers, so the Sadducees are answered on ground of their own choosing and by their own rules.

Luke 20:39-40

Certain of the scribes answer, Master, thou hast well said, a rare moment of Pharisaic agreement against their usual Sadducee rivals on exactly this doctrine of resurrection, and after that they durst not ask him any question at all. The bench reads the silence as the scene's true verdict, three successive traps sprung by the authority question, the tribute question and the resurrection question have all failed, and the questioners now know there is no angle left to try. Luke closes the sequence of public tests with Jesus standing unrefuted before every party that came against him.

Luke 20:41-44

He turns from defense to a question of his own, how say they that Christ is David's son, then quotes Psalm 110:1, the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool, a verse David wrote of one he calls Lord even though the Messiah was also to be his own descendant. David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son, a puzzle the scribes' Messianic expectation could not resolve on its own terms, since a mere human descendant would never be his ancestor's superior. The bench reads the question as pressing toward the two natures the rest of the New Testament will state plainly, true son of David by descent and true Lord of David by deity, without Jesus here spelling out the answer for hearers not yet ready to receive it.

Luke 20:45-47

In the audience of all the people he turns to warn his disciples, beware of the scribes, which desire long robes, greetings in the markets, the highest seats in synagogues and the chief rooms at feasts, appetite for status running through every item on the list. Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers, the two charges paired deliberately, exploiting the very people their long prayers were supposed to serve, and the same shall receive greater damnation, the added public religiosity making the exploitation worse rather than better in God's sight. The bench reads the warning as Jesus closing the chapter's contest by naming what none of his opponents' clever questions had managed to hide, a love of position purchased at the poor's expense.
