Jeremiah 34:1-3

all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion: Nebuchadnezzar's army is described at its widest reach, all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, a coalition of subject peoples arrayed against one city while its own king still sits on his throne inside it. The word Jeremiah is sent to carry is blunt and personal: no escape, certain capture, a meeting face to face with Babylon's king, and the road to Babylon itself. Henry notes the courage it took to carry such a word into a besieged palace, and Keil reads the specificity, eyes shall behold the eyes, as the mark of a true prophecy rather than a guess at the obvious.

Jeremiah 34:4-7

Thou shalt not die by the sword: Yet the sentence carries a mercy inside it: Zedekiah shall not die by the sword but in peace, honored with the burning of spices the former kings received and mourned with the old cry, Ah lord! Jeremiah delivers this word in person while the siege still presses, and verse 7 marks how far the war had already gone, only Lachish and Azekah still standing beside Jerusalem among the fortified towns of Judah. The mercy is real and also small, a peaceful death for a king who will still watch his sons killed and his own eyes put out, and Keil and Henry both read the pairing of a gentle death and a hard captivity as the whole of what was offered.

Jeremiah 34:8-12

to proclaim liberty unto them: Under the pressure of the siege, king and people struck a covenant to let every Hebrew slave go free, the ancient release law kept for once, and for a moment they did as commanded and let them go. The turn comes at once, afterward they turned, and the freed men and women were seized back into service; the word of the Lord comes to Jeremiah while that reversal is still fresh. Gill and Henry both read the timing as the tell, obedience produced by fear rather than conviction, dropped the moment the danger seemed to ease.

Jeremiah 34:13-16

I made a covenant with your fathers: The Lord reaches back to the release law itself, given the day he brought Israel out of Egypt, six years' service and freedom in the seventh, a law the fathers never kept. For once the sons had done right, proclaiming liberty and sealing it with a covenant in the temple, the house called by the Lord's own name, before turning and polluting that name by taking back what they had freed. Keil reads polluted my name as the real charge, a covenant made in God's house broken in God's house, and Henry sets the fathers' old failure beside the sons' fresh one as the same sin worked twice.

Jeremiah 34:17-20

I proclaim a liberty for you: Because you would not proclaim liberty, I proclaim a liberty for you, the exchange the older writers all mark, sword and pestilence and famine now standing in the place of the freedom withheld from others. The men had sealed their promise the ancient way, cutting a calf in two and walking between the halves, the same rite Abram passed through at Genesis 15. Keil and Gill both read verses 19 and 20 as that rite's own curse made good: as the calf was divided, so the covenant breakers will be, dead bodies for the birds of the air and the beasts of the field rather than living witnesses to a kept oath.

Jeremiah 34:21-22

which are gone up from you: The sentence reaches the king himself: Zedekiah and his princes handed to the very army now gone up from you, the temporary lifting of the siege named for the reprieve it was and not a rescue. The Lord commands their return, to fight the city, take it, and burn it, and to leave the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant, the sentence Jeremiah had been carrying since chapter one now given its final order. Barnes and Henry both connect the withdrawal named here to the moment chapter 37 will describe from the other side, an Egyptian relief force drawing Babylon off just long enough for false hope to rise before the siege closes again.
