James 2:1-4

The faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, cannot be held with respect of persons, prosopolempsia, the face-receiving the law forbade judges at Leviticus 19:15. The case study is set in your assembly, sunagoge, the letter's Jewish congregations still wearing the old word: a gold-ringed man ushered to a good place, a poor man in vile raiment stood or floored. The verdict falls on the ushers, ye are become judges of evil thoughts, a courtroom where the bench itself is corrupt.

James 2:5-7

The argument turns on God's own choices: hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, the Lord's first beatitude in his brother's prose. The churches had honored exactly the class oppressing them, rich men who draw you before the judgment seats and blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called, the name invoked over believers at baptism. Partiality toward the persecutor is not merely unkind but absurd, and James argues it as absurdity.

James 2:8-11

the royal law: Leviticus 19:18, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, is named the royal law, the king's own law and the law's own crown, and fulfilling it is doing well; respecting persons breaks it and convicts the respecter as a transgressor. The law's unity does the convicting: offend in one point, guilty of all, because one Lawgiver said both do not commit adultery and do not kill, and snapping one strand breaks the chain that hangs from him. The argument is rabbinic in form and the Lord's in substance.

James 2:12-13

So speak ye, and so do puts both organs under one standard, judgment by the law of liberty, the perfect law of 1:25 that frees precisely by being written within. The maxim that closes the case is double edged: judgment without mercy to him that shewed no mercy, the Lord's own Matthew 7:1 and the unmerciful servant's sentence, and then the flourish, mercy rejoiceth against judgment, mercy boasting over judgment like a victor. The merciful man meets the judgment unafraid.

James 2:14-17

The crux opens with a claimant, though a man SAY he hath faith, and have not works, and the question interrogates the claim, can faith save him, the faith, that kind. The test case is charity's counterfeit: a destitute brother or sister sent off with depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, blessing without bread, and what doth it profit. The verdict coins the letter's famous sentence, faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone, not weak faith but a dead thing wearing faith's name.

James 2:18-20

The challenge makes the frame explicit: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works, demonstration before men, which only works can give, since faith invisible is faith unprovable. The devils also believe, and tremble is the argument's darkest exhibit, monotheism confessed by demons, orthodoxy with shuddering and without surrender, per the letter's plain view of the unseen world. O vain man, empty man, wilt thou know that faith without works is dead, the KJV's reading, with the oldest copies reading idle, arge, workless; either way the demonstration follows.

James 2:21-24

Abraham is the shared exhibit: Paul cites Genesis 15:6 to prove the ungodly justified by believing (Romans 4:2-5), and James cites the Genesis 22 altar where the faith of thirty years before was made perfect, teleioo, brought to its intended completion, and the scripture was fulfilled, the reckoning of 15:6 vindicated in the offering. The two apostles use justified in different courts, Paul of the sinner's standing before God, where works of law are excluded, James of the professor's claim proven real before men; the Reformation line has said it as faith alone justifies, but the faith that justifies is never alone, and the Roman reading stands with its holders. By works a man is justified, and not by faith only strikes at the empty claim of 2:14, and the exposition teaches plainly that neither apostle contradicts the other. He was called the Friend of God, the title 2 Chronicles 20:7 and Isaiah 41:8 gave him.

James 2:25-26

Rahab stands beside Abraham deliberately, the patriarch and the harlot at the two ends of Israel's story and of society, both proven by what they did, she when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way, at the risk of her life. Hebrews 11:31 lists her in faith's own roll for the same act; her lie is not commended and Scripture's silence about it is left as silence. The closing figure seals the argument, as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also, works not as faith's supplement but as its breath.
