Galatians 5:1

Stand fast renews the imperative Paul has driven since 2:4, where spies came to spy out our liberty; the same freedom secured then is now to be held against reentry into the yoke. Entangled translates enechesthe, the language of being caught again in a harness once slipped, and bondage points straight at the Sinai covenant of chapter 4's allegory. The verb is present and continuous, not a single decision but a settled posture the Galatians must keep choosing.

Galatians 5:2-3

Paul stakes his own apostolic authority, Behold, I Paul say unto you, on the single point that submitting to circumcision as a means of justification cancels Christ's profit entirely. Verse 3 presses the logic further: accepting the rite as a legal obligation binds a man to keep the whole law, not a convenient portion of it, since the law is one indivisible system. The Galatians were being offered circumcision as an easy addition to faith; Paul shows it is instead a wholesale change of covenant terms.

Galatians 5:4

Christ is become of no effect unto you states the verse's own scope: the men in view are Galatians seeking justification by law, not every believer in every circumstance. Two readings of fallen from grace stand with their holders. The Wesleyan tradition reads a real forfeiture warning, grace genuinely lost by returning to law-works, while the tradition that holds eternal security reads the fall as a fall from the grace-principle of justification into the law-principle, a swap of the ground of standing rather than the loss of salvation itself.

Galatians 5:5-6

Paul sets the true Christian posture against the law-works the Galatians were pursuing: through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness, a settled expectation rather than an anxious striving. Verse 6 states the letter's positive principle in miniature, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything in Christ Jesus, but faith which worketh by love, pistis di agapes energoumene in the Greek, faith actively working itself out. Calvin reads this as the answer to every charge that justification by faith produces idle believers, since the faith that justifies is never alone and always labors in love.

Galatians 5:7-9

The race metaphor turns abruptly to a question, who did hinder you, using enekopsen, a military term for breaking up a road to stop an advancing column, so that someone deliberately obstructed the Galatians' course. Verse 8 clears both Paul and God, since the persuasion pulling them off course does not come from him that calleth you, leaving the false teachers exposed as its true source. The proverb in verse 9, a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump, warns that legalist error cannot stay contained to a corner of the church but works through the entire body, the same warning Paul later gives the Corinthians against a different corruption.

Galatians 5:10

Paul's confidence rests not in the Galatians' present state but through the Lord, an expectation grounded in grace working on their behalf rather than in their own strength. He turns the weight of the coming judgment onto the agitator, whosoever he be, naming no one directly yet leaving the responsibility for the whole disturbance on a single identifiable source. Confidence and warning stand together, since Paul expects recovery even as he holds the troublemaker to account.

Galatians 5:11

Paul answers a slander apparently circulating, that he himself still preached circumcision, by pointing to the plain fact of his own ongoing persecution, since no one persecutes a preacher who tells Jews what they want to hear. The offence of the cross, skandalon, is the stumbling block of a crucified Messiah, a scandal to Jewish expectation that circumcision added to faith would have softened into an acceptable compromise. If Paul preached the rite, the persecution he suffered for the cross alone would already have stopped.

Galatians 5:12

The severity is Paul's own and the exposition keeps it rather than softening it. Apokopsontai carries a surgical edge, cut off, and many read it against the Phrygian region's own cult of Cybele, whose priests practiced literal self-mutilation, so Paul's wish plays bitterly on a rite the false teachers were already pressing toward. The verse is not a curse on persons but a sharp irony, that if circumcision profits so much, let the knife go further; Chrysostom reads the harshness as proportional to the danger, a physician's alarm at a spreading disease rather than personal malice toward the troublers.

Galatians 5:13

The liberty thread reaches its third beat, from the spies who came to spy out liberty in 2:4, through stand fast in liberty at 5:1, to the calling itself named here, ye have been called unto liberty. Paul immediately fences the freedom against misuse, only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, aphormen, a base of operations a soldier launches from, so that freedom is never a staging ground for indulgence. The alternative he gives is service, by love serve one another, douleuete, the language of slavery turned voluntary and mutual.

Galatians 5:14

Paul closes the citation ledger's final entry with Leviticus 19:18, the same commandment Christ named as the second great commandment, and states that the whole law stands fulfilled in this one word. The claim is not that the ceremonial law is thereby kept but that love accomplishes what the law aimed at all along, the same point the schoolmaster argument of chapter 3 prepared. Fulfilled, pepleroto, is a perfect tense, so love does not merely satisfy the law's demand piecemeal but brings it to its intended completion.

Galatians 5:15

The animal imagery, bite and devour, daknete and katesthiete, pictures the Galatian churches turning on each other exactly as the legalist controversy was setting neighbor against neighbor over circumcision. Take heed warns that the process left unchecked ends in consumed, the same root suggesting total mutual destruction, a community eating itself alive over a dispute Paul has just answered from the law and the promise. The verse pivots the chapter from doctrine to conduct, love of neighbor stated in verse 14 now shown in its breach.

Galatians 5:16

This I say then marks a fresh statement of the letter's positive answer to legalism, walking by the Spirit, peripateite pneumati, a step-by-step dependence rather than a single crisis experience. The promise attached is strong, ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh, ou me with the subjunctive in the Greek, an emphatic negation. Paul is not commanding a work added to faith but describing the Spirit's own sufficiency against a power law could only restrain from the outside.

Galatians 5:17

The conflict named here, flesh against Spirit and Spirit against flesh, is the letter's clearest statement of the two natures at war within the believer, contrary the one to the other rendering antikeitai, a term for armies drawn up in opposition. So that ye cannot do the things that ye would has drawn two readings, some taking it as the flesh frustrating good desires and others as the Spirit restraining the flesh's own wishes, and both readings serve the same pastoral point, that the conflict is real and ongoing. The verse explains why walking in the Spirit of verse 16 is a daily contest and not a single victory.

Galatians 5:18

Led of the Spirit, agesthe, is a passive verb, the believer following rather than driving, and Paul draws the conclusion the whole letter has argued toward, that such a one stands outside the law's jurisdiction, not because the law's moral content is void but because the Spirit produces what the law could only demand. This is the schoolmaster's discharge from chapter 3 applied to daily conduct rather than to justification alone. The verse guards against reading verse 17's conflict as license, since the Spirit who wars against the flesh is also the one who leads a person beyond the law's authority over him.

Galatians 5:19-21

The list opens with manifest, phanera, works plain to any observer, unlike the Spirit's fruit which ripens more slowly and inwardly. Witchcraft translates pharmakeia, sorcery bound up with drug use in the ancient world, and heresies renders haireseis, factions or sects rather than doctrinal error in the modern sense, a warning against party spirit as much as against magic. The list closes with the strongest statement in the chapter, shall not inherit the kingdom of God, a warning Paul says he has already given them in person, that habitual practice of these works marks a life outside the kingdom regardless of profession.

Galatians 5:22-23

the fruit of the Spirit is love: Fruit is singular against the plural works of the flesh, karpos not karpoi, one organic yield with nine facets rather than nine separate achievements to pursue independently. The list runs from love outward through joy and peace to the self-controlled temperance at its close, and against such there is no law states that no legal code stands over conduct the Spirit has already produced, since law exists to restrain what grace has already replaced. Wesley reads the whole list as a single description of the Spirit-filled life rather than a checklist to work through one virtue at a time.

Galatians 5:24

have crucified the flesh: The crucifixion chain reaches its third beat here, after I am crucified with Christ at 2:20 and Christ evidently set forth crucified at 3:1, now stated of every believer collectively, they that are Christ's. Crucified is aorist, pointing to a decisive past act at conversion rather than an ongoing process, even though the fighting of verse 17 continues, since the flesh is judicially put to death though its affections and lusts still have to be resisted daily. The verse answers verse 19's list directly, that the works named there belong to a nature the believer has already put on the cross.

Galatians 5:25

Live and walk use two different verbs, zomen the fact of spiritual life already given, stoichomen the orderly marching that should follow it, a soldier's word for keeping rank. Paul turns the indicative of verse 24, the flesh already crucified, into the imperative that governs the rest of the chapter's practical instructions. The logic is consistent through the letter, that what God has done in Christ becomes the ground for what the believer is now to do.

Galatians 5:26

Vain glory, kenodoxoi, empty-glory seekers, names the precise sin most likely to flourish in a community already torn by the circumcision dispute, since a badge like circumcision or its rejection could easily become another occasion for self-display. Provoking and envying name the two directions that vanity takes, prokaloumenoi challenging others to a contest and phthonountes resenting what a rival already holds. The verse closes the chapter by turning its warning inward, guarding against the very rivalry a fresh legalist controversy would only deepen.
