Ezra5chapter 5

Ezra 5:1-2

The stoppage of the chapter before breaks here: the prophets Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo prophesy to Judah and Jerusalem, and the work restarts through their preaching before any new royal word arrives. Zerubbabel and Jeshua rise and build again, and the text adds that the prophets of God were with them, helping, preaching and building as one labor. This verse and 6:14 are the narrative anchor for both prophetic books, planted here for their own exposition. Haggai's short book supplies the content behind the bare word prophesied, rebuking a people who paneled their own houses while the Lord's house lay waste.

Ezra 5:3-4

Tatnai the governor beyond the river and his companions come to the site and ask a plain question of jurisdiction, who hath commanded you to build this house and make up this wall. The challenge is a formal audit, not an assault, and the elders answer it by giving the names of the builders rather than hiding them. Adam Clarke reads their openness as the confidence of men building under a real grant, willing to be checked. The exchange sets up the letter that follows, a fair record rather than an accusation dressed as fact.

Ezra 5:5

the eye of their God: But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews: the chapter's one line of open theology sits inside an otherwise administrative Aramaic report. The clause explains what a plain reading of events would miss, that Tatnai could not stop the work though he had the standing to try, and the matter runs its course to Darius by letter rather than by force. John Gill reads the eye of God as his watchful providence resting on the elders through the whole exchange. The verse answers in advance the question the letter itself will raise, whether this building has real authority behind it.

Ezra 5:6-8

The copy of the letter that Tatnai and his companions send to Darius is filed here in full, the book's habit of keeping its own documents rather than summarizing them. This section runs in Aramaic, the empire's own language, the correspondence quoted as it was filed. Their report to the king is fair: they name the house of the great God, note that it is built with great stones and timber, and add plainly that the work goes on fast and prospers in their hands. Matthew Henry points out that a hostile governor could have written otherwise, framing the project as rebellion the way the letter in the chapter before had done.

Ezra 5:9-10

Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, who commanded you to build this house: the letter now gives its own account of the interrogation on site. Tatnai's men take names as well as an answer, so the king can verify who stands behind the work rather than judge a rumor. John Gill notes the request is procedural, meant to let the king call the builders to account if the claim proves false. The letter's care to record both question and answer keeps Darius from ruling on hearsay.

Ezra 5:11-12

The elders answer with a recital, not a plea: we are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we build the house that a great king of Israel built long ago. The full title, the God of heaven and earth, is the Persian era's own court language for the Lord, the same title the book uses when kings decree by it. Their history does not skip the exile's cause: our fathers provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, and he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, who destroyed this house and carried the people to Babylon. Adam Clarke calls the confession simple and plain, a people who own their fathers' sin rather than argue their innocence to a foreign court.

Ezra 5:13-15

The elders' recital reaches Cyrus: in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, the same king made a decree to build this house of God. This is the Cyrus of the book's opening chapter, the pagan king the Lord stirred to send the exiles home, so the letter to Darius repeats what the book already told. Cyrus also returned the gold and silver vessels Nebuchadnezzar had carried to Babylon, handing them to a governor named Sheshbazzar with the order to carry them to Jerusalem and let the house of God be built in its place. Jamieson Fausset and Brown note this detail could only come from the Jews' own answer, since the vessels and the governor's commission were their history to tell, not Tatnai's to invent.

Ezra 5:16-17

laid the foundation of the house of God: Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and the elders' answer closes with an honest admission, it has been in building ever since, and it is not finished yet. The unfinished house is the whole reason for the letter, the very thing Tatnai found in progress and asked about. His closing request is even-handed rather than hostile: let the king search the treasure house at Babylon and confirm whether Cyrus really made such a decree, then send his pleasure on the matter. Keil reads the request as the turning point of the episode, since a search of the royal archives is the one thing that can settle the question without another stoppage.
