Ezekiel 42:1-8

The guide brings the prophet into the outer court to the priests' chambers facing the separate place, a three-story block with galleries, the upper floors set back because the galleries took from their breadth, no pillars like the courts' pillars, a walk of ten cubits before the doors. The vision's method continues here as everywhere in these chapters: architecture recorded as an eyewitness tour rather than a builder's plan, which is why the commentators differ over details the text never resolves. The measurements are carried as the text gives them, an hundred cubits and fifty, and the exposition does not force a reconstruction the words do not draw.

Ezekiel 42:9-12

The south side mirrors the north, chambers in the thickness of the court wall with an entry from the east, their ways and doors according to the same fashions. The symmetry is the point the unit carries: the vision's sanctuary is ordered down to its storerooms, north answering south, which Fairbairn reads as the architecture of a holiness that is not improvised. One note serves the mirrored block; the details stand in the text for the reader who wants them.

Ezekiel 42:13-14

The guide interprets, and it is the chapter's one explained point: these are holy chambers where the priests that approach unto the Lord shall eat the most holy things, and where they shall lay the garments wherein they minister, for they are holy, putting on other garments before they approach to those things which are for the people. Holiness in this vision has a wardrobe protocol: what serves at the altar does not walk into the outer court, and the commentators set Lev 6:10-11 and the same changed-garments rule beside it. The chambers exist so that the holy and the common never trade clothes, which is the little chapter's whole theology.

Ezekiel 42:15-20

The tour's inner survey ends and the reed goes around the whole: five hundred reeds on the east, north, south and west, a square, with the purpose stated in the last clause and nowhere softened, a wall round about, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place. The book that watched the glory leave a defiled house (11:23) is building the conditions of its return two chapters before it comes (43:4), as the bench reads the order. The readings on the five hundred reeds' enormous extent (a real future precinct, so the literal line; ideal proportions, so others) are named with holders, and the stated purpose, separation, is the note's last word because it is the text's.
