Commentary on Ezekiel · Written before 420.

(Verse 15 onwards) When he had finished measuring the interior dimensions of the house, he led me along the way of the gate that faced east, and he measured it all around. (He measured the likeness of the house all around in order.) He measured the east side with the measuring rod; it was 500 rods long by the measuring rod all around. (He also measured the north side, south side, and west side.) And he measured against the north wind, five hundred cubits, measuring with a cubit in circumference.

The inner survey ends. The rod goes around the whole: five hundred cubits, a square with a wall all around, “to separate the holy from the common”. The glory left a defiled house at 11:23, and this wall is set two chapters before its return at 43:4.

The Precincts. The temple and its courts were surrounded by an area of exact dimensions 3,000 cubits (1,500 yards) square. See Plan IV. Eze 42:15 The inner house - The temple and its courts, all that lay within the “wall on the outside of the house Eze 40:5; the gate” is the eastern gate of the outer court. Measured it round about - The precincts, into which he had brought the seer through the eastern gate of the outer court.
