Ecclesiastes 8:1

the interpretation of a thing: Who is as the wise man, and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing sets up the chapter's subject before the court counsel begins: practical wisdom that reads a situation and knows when to act. The wise man's face shining and its boldness changed pictures the visible effect of wisdom on a man's whole bearing, as Gill and Henry both note the physical language for wisdom's inward light. The verse stands as the chapter's heading, promising a wisdom that will be tested against kings and against the unequal dealings of providence.

Ecclesiastes 8:2-5

keep the king’s commandment: I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment assumes an absolute monarch whose word is power, and none may say unto him, what doest thou. Standing not in an evil thing and not being hasty to leave his presence is court prudence rather than a rule for private conscience, as Clarke and Bridges both read the passage. The wise man's heart discerns both time and judgment, so the counsel closes on timing itself, knowing when obedience is due and when the moment calls for something else.

Ecclesiastes 8:6-7

the misery of man is great upon him: To every purpose there is time and judgment repeats the theme of chapter three inside the court setting, and it is exactly this unknown timing that makes the misery of man great upon him. No one can tell him what shall be or when, so the wise man's discernment in verse five meets its limit here: he can read a situation but not the future itself. Gill and Henry both take verse seven as the root of much human anxiety, action taken without certainty of outcome or hour.

Ecclesiastes 8:8

no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit: No man hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit, neither power in the day of death states a limit no king's word can override: the same monarch whose commandment governs a courtier's life has no command over his own dying. There is no discharge in that war, the figure of a soldier held to his post no matter how urgent his errand, as Delitzsch reads the military image. Wickedness itself, the last clause adds, delivers no man from it either, closing off the one exemption a reader might imagine.

Ecclesiastes 8:9-10

one man ruleth over another to his own hurt: There is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt turns from the king's court to what the Preacher has watched more broadly, abuse of power that harms the ruler as much as the ruled. He then reports a specific case: wicked men buried with honor, coming and going from the place of the holy, then forgotten in the very city where they had done their evil. The Preacher calls even this forgetting a vanity, since it removes the visible reckoning a reader might expect to find.

Ecclesiastes 8:11

sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily: Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily names the very thing that emboldens sin: the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil precisely because judgment is delayed. The observation is not doubted or softened; the bench reads it as plain moral psychology, slow justice breeding presumption rather than repentance. This verse stands as one side of a tension the chapter will not resolve, set directly against the assurance that follows it.

Ecclesiastes 8:12-13

it shall be well with them that fear God: Yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God answers the delayed-sentence observation of verse eleven directly, and the Preacher states his own certainty although a sinner do evil an hundred times and his days be prolonged. The wicked, by contrast, will not prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God. The two verses hold both truths without resolving them into one, sentence delayed does embolden the sinner, and yet the Preacher knows it will be well with those who fear God.

Ecclesiastes 8:14

just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked: There be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked names the reversal that troubles every honest reader of providence, the righteous suffering what sin deserves and the wicked receiving what righteousness deserves. The Preacher calls this too a vanity, and does not explain it away or pretend the pattern does not exist under the sun. Henry and Clarke both note that this is the very problem Job and several Psalms carry directly, named here without being resolved.

Ecclesiastes 8:15

a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: A man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry is the refrain's fourth appearance, following 2:24, 3:13 and 5:18, and each time it names the same gift rather than a new resignation. The commended mirth is not escape from the hard verses around it but the portion God gives for labor, received rather than seized, as Bridges reads the refrain across the book. It answers the unequal dealings of verse fourteen not by explaining them but by pointing the reader back to what is actually given him to enjoy.

Ecclesiastes 8:16-17

to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth describes the Preacher's most strenuous inquiry in the chapter, pursued even at the cost of sleep. The verdict he reaches closes the search rather than crowning it: a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun, and even a wise man who thinks he knows it shall not be able to find it. Gill reads this as the limit of unaided reason before providence, a limit the chapter has been demonstrating case by case since the king's court.
