Daniel 11:1-4

the first year of Darius the Mede: The revealer of chapter 10 continues without a seam: the same messenger who fought beside Michael now shows the truth about kings to come. Three kings yet in Persia and a fourth far richer stirring up all against Grecia, then a mighty king with great dominion whose kingdom is broken toward the four winds, not to his posterity: the bench reads the corridor as history read it, Xerxes' invasion, Alexander, and the four-way division among generals none of them his heirs, and the precision here is the reason the date of the book has been disputed since Porphyry, a dispute the notes state as history with Jerome's answer beside it.

Daniel 11:5-20

Sixteen verses of south against north, Ptolemies against Seleucids by the whole bench's reading, traced campaign by campaign: the king's daughter given north in a failed alliance, the branch of her roots avenging her, gods and vessels carried captive into Egypt, multitudes raised and cast down, the mount cast up against the fenced cities. At verse 16 the wars enter the glorious land, Judea as the road between the rivals, which is the corridor's whole point of view: the text watches empires through the land they trample. The raiser of taxes destroyed neither in anger, nor in battle closes the stretch, and the notes keep RESTRAINT here, the identifications carried once as the bench carries them rather than verse by verse.

Daniel 11:21-28

The vile person enters without the honour of the kingdom and obtains it by flatteries, and the bench is unanimous on the near identification: Antiochus Epiphanes, the self-styled Illustrious whom his subjects renamed Epimanes, the madman. The prince of the covenant broken, the deceitful league, the scattering of prey and spoil his fathers never practiced, the lies spoken at one table between two kings: the portrait is of power exercised as fraud. His heart against the holy covenant at verse 28 turns the corridor's camera where it will stay, on what this king does to the sanctuary and the saints.

Daniel 11:29-35

The ships of Chittim turn him back, the Roman ultimatum at Alexandria in the common identification the bench carries, and his grief becomes indignation against the holy covenant. Verse 31 is the chapter's crux: the sanctuary polluted, the daily sacrifice taken away, and the ABOMINATION THAT MAKETH DESOLATE set up, the thread that runs 9:27, here, and 12:11, and which the Lord cites at Matt 24:15 as spoken of by Daniel the prophet, still future in his mouth: the readings on near and far fulfilment, Antiochus and a fulfilment beyond him, are named with holders and no date is set. The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits, and they that understand shall instruct many though they fall by sword and flame: the Maccabean generation is the bench's near reading, and the refining purpose, to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end, is the text's own.

Daniel 11:36-39

At verse 36 the readings divide, and the notes name them: the wilful king who magnifies himself above every god and speaks marvellous things against the God of gods is Antiochus continued, so part of the bench, while the older dispensational line and much of the church's reading hear a figure beyond Antiochus, the final adversary Paul's man of sin echoes (2 Thess 2:4 speaks this verse's language, exalting himself above all that is called God), positions stated with holders and no verdict. Neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women regarded, the God of forces honoured with gold in strongholds: the portrait outruns what history records of Antiochus at several points, which is the textual ground the far readings stand on, stated as evidence rather than settled.

Daniel 11:40-45

at the time of the end: At the time of the end the corridor accelerates: south pushing, north sweeping like a whirlwind with chariots and many ships, the glorious land entered, Edom, Moab and Ammon escaping, Egypt's treasures taken, tidings out of the east and north troubling him. The readings are named as before, a continuation of Antiochus that history does not match in detail, or the final campaign the phrase time of the end announces; the identifications belong to the positions, not to the page, and the parking order keeps every modern map off it. The end itself is stated with the book's austerity: he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him, a sentence the commentators note for what it withholds, no battle described, no agent named, only the appointment kept.
