Acts 8:1-3

Saul was consenting unto his death names him at Stephen's murder before the narrative turns to follow him, and the persecution that breaks out that day scatters the Jerusalem church throughout Judea and Samaria, the first literal steps of the program verse's own itinerary. Saul's own zeal is described in the harshest terms available, entering into every house and committing men and women to prison, the same violence Paul will later confess with shame in his own letters. Devout men bury Stephen with lamentation even as the wider church runs for its life, grief and courage sitting side by side in the same verses.

Acts 8:4

Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word turns the persecution itself into the engine of the word's advance, ordinary believers rather than apostles carrying the gospel outward. The apostles alone stay in Jerusalem by verse one, so the men doing this preaching are the rank and file the earlier chapters never named individually. This is the second panel of the program verse's own itinerary beginning to fill in, Judea and Samaria receiving the word from people scattered against their will.

Acts 8:5-8

Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them, a deliberate crossing since Jews and Samaritans, per John's own gospel, had no dealings with each other. The people gave heed with one accord, hearing and seeing miracles, unclean spirits crying out as they left the possessed and the lame and palsied healed, signs that authenticate the message rather than replace it. Great joy filled the city, the same joy the gospel produces everywhere Luke records its reception, a mark the exposition will meet again at the Ethiopian's road and at Cornelius's house.

Acts 8:9-11

Simon, who beforetime in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the people of Samaria, had let it be given out that himself was some great one, and the city from least to greatest called him the great power of God. Ancient sources outside Scripture, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus among them, remembered a Simon of Samaria who founded a rival system claiming semi-divine status, and the bench reads this Simon as the same tradition's starting point. The text's own interest is narrower than the later legends, marking a man whose hold on a city rested on manufactured wonder rather than truth, set up to be answered by Philip's real signs.

Acts 8:12-13

When they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, men and women alike, the ordinary pattern of belief followed at once by baptism holding here as everywhere in the book. Simon himself believed also, was baptized, and continued with Philip, wondering at the miracles and signs, language that reports his profession without yet declaring his heart, a question the next verses press. The bench differs on whether Simon's faith was ever more than an impressed man attaching himself to a bigger power than his own, a question the text leaves open rather than settling for the reader.

Acts 8:14-17

News that Samaria had received the word of God brings Peter and John down from Jerusalem, the mother church confirming rather than withholding what the Spirit had already begun through Philip's preaching. The parenthesis is pointed, as yet the Spirit was fallen upon none of them, only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, so that the gift comes distinctly through the apostles' prayer and laying on of hands rather than at the moment of baptism itself. The bench reads the delay as tied to this specific hinge in salvation history, binding the historically hostile Samaritan believers visibly to the apostolic Jerusalem church rather than establishing a fixed order that must repeat at every conversion; the gift itself remains the church's living inheritance, and the scene's lesson is God visibly knitting a divided people into one church.

Acts 8:18-19

he offered them money: When Simon saw that the Holy Ghost was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, asking to buy the same power so that whomsoever he laid hands on might receive the Holy Ghost. The request exposes what his earlier wonder had not, a man still thinking in the categories of his old trade, spiritual power treated as a commodity to be purchased and resold. The sin, later given his own name in church history as simony, marks every subsequent attempt to buy office or gift in the church.

Acts 8:20-23

Peter's answer is as severe as any rebuke in the book, thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money, refusing Simon's offer without qualification. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter names the danger plainly, a heart not right in the sight of God rather than a technical error in etiquette. Peter still calls him to repent and pray, in the gall of bitterness and the bond of iniquity describing a condition Scripture treats as reversible by grace rather than a sentence pronounced without recourse, and the bench divides over whether Simon at this moment was ever truly converted or was a false professor now unmasked.

Acts 8:24

Simon's reply, pray ye to the Lord for me, asks Peter and John to intercede rather than praying for himself directly, and the bench has long read the difference as telling, a man more afraid of consequences than grieved over sin. Scripture records no later word confirming genuine repentance, and the text leaves his end where it found his profession, uncertain rather than declared, a caution the exposition will not resolve past what is written.

Acts 8:25

Peter and John, their mission of confirmation finished, testify and preach the word of the Lord on the way back, and preach the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans besides, so that the apostles who once wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan village, in Luke's own gospel, now evangelize that same region themselves. The turn from James and John's old request in Luke chapter nine to this verse is one of the clearest personal transformations the book records without a word of comment.

Acts 8:26-28

An angel, not the Spirit this time, redirects Philip from a fruitful city work to a desert road toward Gaza, an assignment that would have looked like a demotion had he not obeyed it. The man he meets is an Ethiopian eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, a court official who had come to Jerusalem to worship despite the law's restriction on eunuchs entering the full assembly, and Isaiah's own promise had already offered such a man a place and a name better than sons and daughters. He is found reading Esaias the prophet in his chariot, a Gentile God-fearer whose worship the temple courts could only partly receive and whom the gospel is about to receive completely.

Acts 8:29-31

The Spirit's direct instruction, go near and join thyself to this chariot, sends Philip running to catch a moving vehicle, the same immediacy that marks every Spirit-led step in this chapter. Philip's question, understandest thou what thou readest, meets an honest answer, how can I except some man should guide me, and the eunuch's own reply becomes the invitation every evangelist since has hoped to hear, asking Philip to come up and sit with him. A man with more authority and more education than Philip humbles himself to ask an unnamed evangelist for help, an answer to prayer the text presents without praising his humility directly.

Acts 8:32-33

The place of Scripture he was reading, led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth, is Isaiah's fourth Servant Song, the chapter the New Testament cites of Christ more than any other Old Testament passage. In his humiliation his judgment was taken away, and who shall declare his generation, asks the very question the eunuch is about to put to Philip, whether the prophet meant himself or another. The exposition reads Isaiah chapter fifty-three here exactly as the New Testament everywhere else reads it, a description of the suffering and exalted Messiah, and Philip's answer in the next verse will confirm it directly rather than leave the question open.

Acts 8:34-35

Of whom speaketh the prophet this, of himself, or of some other man, is the same question Jewish and Christian readers of Isaiah fifty-three have debated across the centuries, some finding the Servant in the nation of Israel itself and others in an individual figure. Philip began at the same scripture and preached unto him Jesus, planting the gospel in the text the eunuch already held rather than starting anywhere else, the pattern for every gospel presentation the bench commends. Isaiah's own passage supplies both the starting point and the full content, since a hearer who understands the Servant's substitutionary suffering has already been shown the cross before Philip says a further word.

Acts 8:36-38

As they went on their way they came unto a certain water, and the eunuch's own question, what doth hinder me to be baptized, reads as a heart already persuaded rather than a formality. The confession that answers him in the received text, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, is absent from the oldest surviving manuscripts and does not appear in the earliest versions, though it was already being quoted by Irenaeus and Cyprian in the second and third centuries, so the bench presents it honestly as the received text's reading rather than claiming manuscript unanimity it does not have. Philip commanded the chariot to stand still, and they went down both into the water, an immersion the text's own wording assumes rather than argues for, a detail readers on different sides of the mode question weigh differently.

Acts 8:39-40

When they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, a sudden removal the bench compares to Elijah's translations in the Old Testament, and the eunuch saw him no more yet went on his way rejoicing, needing no further human helper once he had Christ. Philip surfaces at Azotus, ancient Ashdod, some twenty miles up the coast, and preaches in every city on the road north until he reaches Caesarea, the port city where the book will find him settled with four prophesying daughters many chapters later. The chapter that opened with a church scattered by violence closes with an evangelist carried by the Spirit himself, the same hand governing both the persecution and the mission it produced.
