2 Peter 3:1-2

Peter names both his letters here, this second epistle, beloved, and identifies his method as reminder rather than novelty, stirring up, diegeiro, waking again, your pure minds, eilikrine, literally sun-judged, tested and found clear, by way of remembrance. Verse 2 names the two anchors he wants remembered together, the words spoken before by the holy prophets and the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour, Old Testament prophecy and apostolic teaching standing on equal ground as the church's rule. The scoffers about to be described are met in advance by a church already warned, forewarning functioning as the letter's own defense.

2 Peter 3:3-4

Knowing this first sets the coming of scoffers, empaiktai, mockers, as itself a sign rather than a surprise, walking after their own lusts, their doctrine following their appetite rather than the reverse. Their taunt in verse 4 names the whole controversy in one question, where is the promise of his coming, demanding proof on their own terms, for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation, an argument from delay treated as an argument from impossibility. The scoffers' logic assumes uniformity has always governed the world, the very assumption the next verses answer with the flood.

2 Peter 3:5-7

They willingly are ignorant, thelontas lanthanei, choosing not to know, that the same word of God that made the heavens and formed the earth out of water and by water also unmade a world by that water, the flood standing as the scoffers' own counter-example, uniformity broken once already by the very word they treat as inert. The heavens and the earth which are now are kept in store, tethesaurismenoi, treasured up as in a storehouse, by the same word, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. The parallel is exact, that as the word which made the world once unmade it by water, the same word holds it now for a second unmaking by fire, and the pattern denies the scoffers' premise before answering their question directly.

2 Peter 3:8

One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day answers the scoffers' delay with Psalm 90:4's own language, and the readings divide with holders, one taking the verse as pure statement about God's timelessness outside human calendars, patience rather than arithmetic, another finding in it a rough day-for-a-thousand-years pattern some early fathers read into the creation week itself, a use the exposition names as reception history rather than the verse's own argument. Peter's own point is neither delay nor a hidden clock but perspective, that what looks like slowness from inside one lifetime is no slowness at all from outside time. The verse answers where is the promise of his coming not with a date but with a correction of the question's assumption.

2 Peter 3:9

The delay itself is reinterpreted: the Lord is not slack, braduno, slow or late, but longsuffering, makrothymei, patient toward us-ward, not willing that any should perish, boulomenos, his settled will, but that all should come to repentance. The scope of any and all is read two ways with holders, exactly as at 1 Timothy 2:4, one reading it of all without distinction, God's genuine desire for every person's repentance held alongside human freedom to refuse it, another reading the us-ward and any within the elect in view, God's patience toward those he will certainly bring in. Either reading keeps the verse's own force intact, that the delay is mercy at work rather than slackness, and every day it continues is a day of grace rather than a day wasted.

2 Peter 3:10

The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, unannounced and at the hour least expected, exactly the Lord's own figure in Matthew 24:43, and when it comes the heavens pass away with a great noise, roizedon, the rushing, crackling sound of something collapsing at speed. The elements shall melt with fervent heat, and the earliest manuscripts read at the clause's end heurethesetai, shall be found, or laid bare, rather than the burned up of the later text, a real textual variant the exposition names rather than resolves. Whichever verb closes the verse, the scene is total exposure, everything hidden brought into the open at the day's arrival.

2 Peter 3:11-12

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved turns doctrine straight into duty, what manner of persons ought ye to be, potapous, what country or what kind of people, in all holy conversation and godliness. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God repeats the verb of watchfulness the letter used already in chapter 1, the readers actively awaiting rather than merely informed, while the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat restate verse 10's picture as the ground for verse 11's command. The logic runs from cosmic dissolution to personal holiness without a gap, what is coming shapes how one lives now.

2 Peter 3:13

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness, and the burning just described is read two ways with holders, one taking the cosmos as annihilated and replaced outright, another as purified and renewed rather than erased, a reading some find supported by the earth abiding for ever of Ecclesiastes 1:4 and the renewed creation of Romans 8:21. The site's futurist posture receives the new heavens and new earth as a real coming event, its place in the sequence held under the same premillennial framework carried elsewhere on this site, the burn-or-renew question itself left to its own holders rather than settled here. Righteousness dwelling there, katoikei, at home rather than visiting, is the promise's own center, a world where holiness is finally native rather than embattled.

2 Peter 3:14

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things draws the same conclusion chapter 1 drew from the calling and election, that hope produces diligence rather than passivity, spoudasate, make every effort, that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless, amomoi, terms drawn from the sacrificial system applied now to the whole life. The three words together, peace, spotless, blameless, answer the false teachers' own portrait from chapter 2 point for point, their spots and blemishes at 2:13 set directly against the readers' called-for purity here. Waiting for the day rightly does not mean waiting idle, it means being found ready when it comes.

2 Peter 3:15

our beloved brother Paul: Account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation restates verse 9's whole argument in a single clause, delay read rightly as opportunity rather than absence. Peter reaches for a second apostolic witness to confirm it, our beloved brother Paul, who hath written unto you according to the wisdom given unto him, sophian, a wisdom Peter names as gift rather than native genius. The brotherly title itself is worth noting, one apostle honoring another by name inside inspired Scripture, no rivalry between the pillars the early church remembered arguing at Antioch.

2 Peter 3:16

Verse 16 is the letter's canon-consciousness verse: Paul's epistles contain some things hard to be understood, dysnoeta, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, strebolousin, twist as on a rack, as they do also the other scriptures, tas loipas graphas. Paul's letters are named in the same breath and the same category as the writings Peter has already called scripture earlier in this letter, an apostle placing another apostle's letters inside the same authoritative body he has spent two chapters defending, the clearest statement in the letter of the New Testament's own self-consciousness as scripture in formation. The wresting ends unto their own destruction, apoleian, the identical word used of the false teachers throughout chapter 2, difficulty in a text becoming an occasion for ruin only in hands already unstable.

2 Peter 3:17-18

Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before turns the whole letter's warning into a final charge, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error, plane, wandering, of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness, sterigmou, a firm footing rather than a mere feeling. Grow in grace, and in the knowledge, gnosei, of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ closes the letter on the same word it opened on, knowledge answered now not with a ladder to climb but with a single command to keep growing, the true counterfeit-proof of the false knowledge chapter 2 exposed. To him be glory both now and for ever, the doxology giving Christ the honor the false teachers stole for themselves throughout the letter, and Amen seals a book that began with faith and ends with worship.
