2 Kings 2:1

Gilgal was Israel's first camp beyond Jordan, where twelve stones stood as a monument and the tabernacle rested before Shiloh, so Elijah's last road on earth opens at the ground where the nation's own crossing began (Josh 4:19). Scripture already holds one man taken without dying, Enoch at Genesis 5:24, and Henry and the older writers read the whirlwind ascent as the same order of departure repeated under the law, a picture later writers apply to the opening of the kingdom of heaven at Christ's ascension. Barnes notes the chapter stands out of its own chronological place: Elijah was not taken up until after Jehoram's accession in Judah, years after the events just told in chapter 1, because the writer chose to close Elijah's story before turning to Elisha's.

2 Kings 2:2-3

At Bethel Elisha swears an oath as solemn as any in Scripture, as the Lord liveth and as thy soul liveth, and refuses to leave his master's side despite three separate dismissals across the chapter. The sons of the prophets at Bethel already know what is coming without Elijah telling them, an independent word given to the school itself, and Elisha answers only, yea, I know it, hold ye your peace. The scene sets the pattern the rest of the chapter repeats: Elijah tests the succession by trying to send Elisha away, and Elisha answers the test simply by staying.

2 Kings 2:4-6

The same scene plays twice more, at Jericho and then at Jordan, Elijah sending Elisha away and Elisha swearing the same oath both times: as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. The sons of the prophets at Jericho independently know what Bethel's school already knew, so the coming departure is confirmed by two separate prophetic communities before it happens. By the time the pair reach Jordan every human witness has been offered a door out and every one has been refused, and the last stretch of the road is walked by two men alone.

2 Kings 2:7-8

Fifty of the sons of the prophets climb the heights to watch from a distance while Elijah and Elisha stand at Jordan's edge, and Elijah takes his mantle, folds it, and strikes the water, which divides so that the two go over on dry ground. The same river bed had opened once before for a whole nation crossing behind Joshua (Josh 3 to 4), and now it opens again for two men leaving the land it once received; the mantle does what the ark once did. Nothing in the text calls it a chariot or a display, only a mantle and a struck river, and the fifty watchers are kept at a distance so that what happens next, on the far bank, has almost no witnesses at all.

2 Kings 2:9-10

Elijah offers Elisha one request before he is taken, and Elisha asks for a double portion of thy spirit, the exact share Deuteronomy 21:17 reserves for a firstborn son claiming his father's inheritance. The request is not for worldly advantage but for the standing of an heir, Elisha asking to be received as Elijah's spiritual firstborn among all the sons of the prophets rather than merely one disciple among many. Elijah answers honestly that this lies past his own power to grant, a hard thing that only God can give, and sets a sign, whether Elisha sees him taken, that will show whether the request has been heard.

2 Kings 2:11-12

A chariot of fire and horses of fire come between the two men while they are still walking and talking, and Elijah goes up by a whirlwind, not by the chariot itself, which parts him from Elisha rather than carrying him. Elisha's cry, my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof, names what Elijah had been to the nation, a stronger defense than any army; the same cry returns word for word in 13:14, spoken this time by king Joash over the dying Elisha himself. Elisha tears his own clothes in two, the mourner's act, and the tear also marks the seam between one prophet's ministry and the next.

2 Kings 2:13-14

Elisha takes up the mantle that fell from Elijah and carries it back to Jordan alone, and where his master struck the water and asked nothing, Elisha strikes it and asks aloud, where is the Lord God of Elijah. Spurgeon preached a whole sermon from this question, Where Is the God of Elijah, reading it as the standing cry of any generation that has watched an older faith die and wonders whether the same God still answers. The waters part a second time, exactly as they had for Elijah, and Elisha crosses on the same dry ground his master had just walked, Elijah's last miracle becoming Elisha's first with no gap between the two ministries.

2 Kings 2:15

The sons of the prophets watching from Jericho draw the plain conclusion from the parted river: the spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha, and they come to meet him and bow to the ground before him. Their submission answers Joshua 1, where Israel obeyed Joshua once they saw that the LORD was with him as he had been with Moses; a school trained under one master transfers its loyalty the moment it sees the same power at work in his successor. Nothing in the verse rests on Elisha's own claim; the school reaches its verdict from the evidence of the crossed river alone.

2 Kings 2:16-18

Fifty strong men press Elisha to let them search for Elijah, afraid the Spirit of the Lord has only carried him off and set him down on some mountain or in some valley, the same kind of removal Obadiah once feared for Elijah himself at 1 Kings 18:12. Elisha refuses at first, knowing the search is useless, but yields under their pressing until he was ashamed, and the fifty spend three days combing the country and find nothing. When they return he asks only, did I not say unto you, go not, closing the matter without a lecture.

2 Kings 2:19-20

The men of Jericho bring Elisha a civic complaint rather than a spiritual one: the situation of this city is pleasant, but the water is naught, and the ground barren, a stream commonly blamed for miscarriage among cattle and people alike. Elisha calls for a new cruse, never used, and salt, and the request is deliberately impractical; salt by nature makes water worse, not better, so whatever happens next cannot be credited to the vessel or the substance. The men bring exactly what he asks without argument, the same trust the sons of the prophets have just shown him.

2 Kings 2:21-22

Elisha carries the salt to the spring itself rather than treating the stream downstream, and speaks a formula in the Lord's name, I have healed these waters, there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. Salt elsewhere in Scripture marks judgment, the ground sown with salt after Abimelech's slaughter at Judges 9:45, but here it becomes the vehicle of healing instead, a reversal the commentators note without needing to force one meaning onto every use of the word. The narrator adds his own confirmation, unto this day, dating a healing that was still holding when Kings was written, later travelers identifying the spring as Ain es-Sultan near Jericho's ruins.

2 Kings 2:23-24

Going up from Jericho toward Bethel, the city that had carried Jeroboam's calf since the kingdom split, Elisha meets a crowd that mocks him, go up, thou bald head, go up, thou bald head, deliberately parodying the ascension the whole country had just heard about. The Hebrew word rendered little children is the same word used elsewhere of grown men, and Wesley reads the mockers as young men old enough to know what they were doing rather than small boys, citing its use for adults in Genesis and Ruth. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read them the same way, an idolatrous crowd sarcastically daring the prophet to ascend as his master had rather than a band of true children. Elisha curses them in the name of the Lord rather than his own, and two she bears come out of the wood and maul forty and two of them, a judgment Barnes reads as falling on the parents whose contempt for the Lord's prophet their children only repeated.

2 Kings 2:25

The chapter closes with two place names doing quiet work: Carmel, where Elijah had made his stand against Baal's prophets and where Elisha will later keep his own gatherings (2 Ki 4:23-25), and Samaria, the kingdom's capital, where his public ministry now properly begins. Elisha's road from Gilgal to the Jordan and back has carried him through every station of Elijah's own ministry before he ever performs a miracle beyond the river, so that his authority rests on retracing his master's ground before he adds anything of his own. The next chapter opens on the throne itself, and this one has spent its last verse simply getting the new prophet there.
