2 Chronicles 9:1-2

The queen of Sheba travels from southern Arabia to test Solomon with hard questions, and Jesus names her the queen of the south rising in judgment against a generation that refuses one greater than Solomon, Matt 12:42 and Luke 11:31. Chronicles opens this scene almost word for word from 1 Ki 10:1-2, where the fuller exposition of the visit already stands. Placed here, near the reign's close, the scene answers 2 Chr 1's opening claim that the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly, a frame Chronicles draws tighter than Kings does.

2 Chronicles 9:3-4

What overwhelms the queen is not one marvel but a whole functioning court, the table, the seated servants, the attending ministers, and Solomon's own ascent to the house of the Lord, leaving her with no more spirit in her. Chronicles lists the same items as 1 Ki 10:4-5 in the same order, a parallel the Kings exposition already carries in full. The detail Chronicles keeps that a reader could pass over is the ascent to the temple itself, placed last among the wonders she sees.

2 Chronicles 9:5-6

She confesses that the report she carried from home fell short, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me. Report and sight are set against each other, and sight wins, the same structure Kings uses at 1 Ki 10:6-7. Wesley reads her admission as the pattern of every honest inquirer into Scripture itself, that what is heard secondhand is always less than what is found by seeking.

2 Chronicles 9:7-8

Her blessing moves from Solomon's household to God himself, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the Lord thy God. The phrase leans on the doctrine 1 Chr 28:5 and 29:23 already state outright, that Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord, and here a foreign queen confirms from outside what the Chronicler asserts from inside. Henry traces the king's happiness and the kingdom's up to the same fountain, the divine favour that loved Israel for ever.

2 Chronicles 9:9

Her gift of gold and spices in great abundance is itself a fulfillment, the promised riches of 2 Chr 1:12 arriving by a stranger's hand. The verse's own comment, neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba gave, marks the gift as unrepeated rather than merely large.

2 Chronicles 9:10-11

brought gold from Ophir: The narrator breaks from the queen's visit to note Huram's servants bringing algum wood from Ophir, which Solomon turns into terraces for the temple and the palace, and into harps and psalteries for singers. Kings calls the same wood almug and uses it for pillars; the Chronicler's own interest lands the timber instead on the instruments of the Levitical choirs he founded at 1 Chr 25. A visitor's gold funds the building; a trading partner's wood funds the singing.

2 Chronicles 9:12

Solomon answers her gift with his own, beyond what she brought, and she returns to her own land. Clarke notes the verse does not mean Solomon returned her presents but added royal bounty on top of them, gifts fit for curiosities she could carry home.

2 Chronicles 9:13-16

The annual gold intake, six hundred and threescore and six talents, funds the two hundred large shields and three hundred smaller shields of beaten gold housed in the forest of Lebanon armory. These same shields do not stay Solomon's; 2 Chr 12:9 records Shishak carrying them off within Rehoboam's fifth year, and Rehoboam replaces them with brass. The gold Chronicles spends four verses describing here is gone from the record two chapters later, a fall told as briefly as the making.

2 Chronicles 9:17-19

a great throne of ivory: The throne combines ivory and gold, six steps, a footstool, armrests with lions, and twelve more lions on the steps, matching 1 Ki 10:18-20 detail for detail. Henry reads the lustre as a type of the greater kingdom to come, a faint representation of Christ's throne set above every throne, a reading offered as the church's typology rather than the text's own statement. The twelve lions on David's son's throne stand over Israel's twelve tribes as plainly as the number allows.

2 Chronicles 9:20-21

Gold replaces silver so completely in daily use that silver is not any thing accounted of, and the ships of Tarshish sailing every three years bring gold, silver, ivory, apes and peacocks home in the same cargo that made silver common. The Hebrew words behind apes and peacocks are themselves foreign loanwords, which the older commentators take as evidence of a voyage reaching well past the Mediterranean trade lanes.

2 Chronicles 9:22-25

passed all the kings of the earth: Solomon exceeds every king in riches and wisdom, and all the kings of the earth are said to seek his presence, the scene behind the greater than Solomon that 1 Kings 10 already carries in full at its own telling. Verse 25 counts four thousand stalls for horses and chariots; 1 Ki 4:26 gives forty thousand, and the older commentators weigh the numbers as a copying variant between the two records rather than two different counts of the same stable. Chronicles states the scale without drawing any lesson from it here.

2 Chronicles 9:26-28

Solomon's reach runs from the river to the Philistine border and Egypt, silver made as common as stones, cedar as common as sycamore, and horses brought from Egypt and every land. In 1 Kings this same notice of horses from Egypt sits beside Deut 17:16's ban on a king multiplying horses and returning to Egypt for them, a juxtaposition the narrative then answers in chapter 11's fall. Chronicles carries the notice without the chapter that would give it a shadow, since the fall it would foreshadow is never told here.

2 Chronicles 9:29

the visions of Iddo the seer: The Chronicler names his own sources by title, the book of Nathan, the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Jeroboam is named here and nowhere else told: Chronicles never narrates his rise, his rebellion, or the kingdom's division, so the one mention of his name stands as a citation with no story attached to it in this book. Henry reads the silence over Solomon's own sin the same way, as an intimation that what is not repeated is not held against him.

2 Chronicles 9:30-31

reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel: Forty years, then Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. This is the chapter's loudest silence: 1 Kings gives Solomon's foreign wives, his heart turned after other gods, and the Lord's anger and the kingdom's tearing in eleven full chapters, and Chronicles tells none of it, closing the reign on the queen's gold and the ivory throne instead. The book's own method from its genealogies onward is selection toward the temple, the throne of the Lord, and the line that carries the promise, and this ending is that method applied to its own builder.
