1 Samuel 4:1-2

Israel camps at Eben-ezer and the Philistines at Aphek, and the first clash costs four thousand men before anyone in the camp asks why. The name Eben-ezer stands in the narrative here, years before Samuel raises the actual stone and names it so at 7:12, so this first use runs ahead of the event it later marks. The defeat opens the chapter without a word of prayer or enquiry, which sets the pattern the rest of the ark narrative will correct.

1 Samuel 4:3

The elders never ask what sin brought the defeat; they ask only for the ark, as though the box itself could win the battle without Israel turning back to the Lord who dwells above it. Fetching the ark on this reasoning treats a holy object the way a soldier treats a charm carried into battle, and the verses that follow show what happens when the object is handled apart from the God who gave it. Henry and Gill both note that no priest calls the people to repentance in this council, only to the symbol of God's presence.

1 Samuel 4:4

the two sons of Eli: Hophni and Phinehas go out with the ark, the two priests the man of God warned at 2:34 would die on one day as the sign that his word against Eli's house was true. Their presence beside the ark marks a corrupted priesthood carrying a holy object into battle rather than repenting of what they had done at the tabernacle door. The narrator names them here so that their deaths later in the chapter read as a fulfillment already spoken, not as a fresh disaster.

1 Samuel 4:5-6

Israel's shout when the ark enters camp is loud enough that the ground itself seems to answer, and the Philistines hear it from their own lines and ask what it means. Israel treats the noise and the ark's presence as enough by themselves, never pausing to ask whether the Lord goes with them in favor or merely rides with them under judgment. The Philistines, hearing only the report and not the reason behind it, correctly identify the sound as the ark's arrival before the fighting even resumes.

1 Samuel 4:7-9

The Philistines call Israel's God by the plural Gods that smote the Egyptians, remembering the plagues of the exodus by report generations later and dreading a defeat they have not forgotten. Their fear names the true danger, presence, while the Israelites who carry the ark treat it as a weapon rather than as the sign of a God they must reckon with. Fear does not send the Philistines fleeing; it drives them to fight harder, and verse 9 turns their dread into resolve with a call to quit themselves like men.

1 Samuel 4:10-11

The second battle is worse than the first: thirty thousand footmen fall, the army scatters to its own tents, and the ark itself is carried off by the enemy it was fetched to defeat. Hophni and Phinehas die in the same clash, and their deaths on one day complete the sign the man of God spoke at 2:34 word for word. Bringing the ark did not bring victory, and the narrator lets the bare numbers make the point without comment.

1 Samuel 4:12-14

A man of Benjamin runs from the field to Shiloh with his clothes torn and earth on his head, the standard signs of disaster carried the whole distance on foot. Eli sits by the road watching because his heart trembles for the ark of God rather than for his sons, a detail the older writers read as the old priest's rightly ordered fear even after his failure as a father. The city's outcry reaches Eli before the messenger himself does, so that he asks after the noise before he learns its cause.

1 Samuel 4:15-18

Eli is ninety-eight and blind, and the messenger must tell rather than show him what has happened, that Israel fled, the sons are dead, and the ark is taken. It is the word ark, not the word sons, that fells him; he falls backward off his seat at the mention of it, breaks his neck, and dies an old and heavy man. The chapter closes his life in a single line, that he had judged Israel forty years, the same span later given for Saul's reign at Acts 13:21, though Samuel itself never states that number for Saul.

1 Samuel 4:19-20

Phinehas's wife goes into premature labor at the news that the ark is taken and both men of her house are dead, and the verse names the ark before the husband among the things that broke her. When the women try to comfort her with the birth of a son, she does not answer and does not regard it, her grief entirely swallowed by the loss of the ark rather than eased by new life. The verse gives her no name of her own, only her relation to Phinehas, and lets her silence carry the weight the narrator does not state directly.

1 Samuel 4:21-22

She names the child I-chabod and gives the reason twice in two verses, the glory is departed from Israel, once for the household's dead and once for the ark alone, as though the sentence needed saying a second time to be believed. Later Scripture reads this day as more than one family's grief: Psalm 78:60 says the Lord forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, and Jeremiah 7:12 and 14 send a later generation to go and see what he did to the place, as a warning. Shiloh empties here and never again holds the ark or the tabernacle in Israel's worship.
