Which lay between the rivers Arnon and Jabbok; their particular names may be seen in Num 32:3, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites; being given to the Reubenites and Gadites, who inhabited them, as their possession and inheritance, Num 32:2, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof; or "daughters thereof" (q).

This is the first land Israel takes and lives in since Egypt, from the Arnon to the Jabbok, and the cities are occupied, not levelled. Genesis 15:16 had said the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete, and the Amorite is the first nation dispossessed. The Jabbok is where Jacob wrestled at Genesis 32:22-24.

The Hebrew calls the villages daughters, as John Gill notes. Gill adds that these cities were given to Reuben and Gad, and Numbers 32:3 lists several of them by name. Albert Barnes places Heshbon on the high plateau due east of the point where the Jordan enters the Dead Sea, conspicuous from every part of that plateau.

Heshbon - Now Heshban, a ruined city, due east of the point where the Jordan enters the Dead Sea; conspicuous from all parts of the high plateau on which it stands, but concealed, like the rest of the plateau, from the valley beneath.
