Commentary

A fretting leprosy - i. e. a malignant or corroding leprosy. What was the nature of the leprosy in clothing, which produced greenish or reddish spots, cannot be precisely determined. It was most likely destructive mildew, perhaps of more than one kind.

The same word is then used of a garment, which has no skin and cannot fall ill. Wool, linen, warp, woof and anything made of skin are shut up seven days and looked at again on the same schedule as a man. A spreading plague in cloth is burnt whole, and Leviticus 14:33-53 will run the procedure again on the stones of a house.
