Chapter summary

Identification of leprosy. The priest is the examiner — house-by-house, garment-by-garment, body-by-body. White hair, deep-lying skin, raw flesh in the rising: uncleanness. The leper rends his clothes, covers his upper lip, cries ‘unclean, unclean’, and dwells alone outside the camp. Clothes and skins with the plague are burned. The chapter's 59 verses set a careful case law for a disease the ancient world could neither cure nor easily name. Henry reads it as the figure of sin; Gill notes the priestly function of diagnosis before cleansing. A disease that separates is met with ceremony and discipline.

Drafted from Matthew Henry, Calvin, Gill, Clarke, JFB, and Barnes.
