Benjamin draws first and gets a strip between Judah and Joseph. The southern border is Judah's northern line from 15:5-9 traced in reverse. Barnes holds that the text of this chapter and the next is in disorder and that many places named can no longer be located.

Starting at the outskirts leaves the town itself to Judah, which is how verse 14 describes it. Yet verse 28 counts Kiriath-jearim among Benjamin's towns, so it sat on the seam between the two tribes. The Waters of Nephtoah mark Judah's line at 15:9 as well.
