Nephtoab is probably the modern “Ain Lifta”, two miles and a half northwestward of Jerusalem: and Mount Ephron is conjecturally connected with the city Ephrain 2Ch 13:19 or Ophrah Jos 18:23.

Judah is given first and given most, before the tabernacle tribe and before Joseph, which matches the scepter of Genesis 49:10 rather than birth order. The lot is literal, as Numbers 26:55 and Joshua 14:2 both say, so nobody could steer these borders.

Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim)
Baalah is the older name of Kiriath-jearim. Clarke notes the town's later fame as the place where the ark stayed twenty years, which 1 Samuel 7:2 records. Barnes places the Waters of Nephtoah at a spring about two and a half miles northwest of Jerusalem.
