on Genesis 14:3-4

The writer gives the valley the name it carried later, the Salt Sea, though the plain was well watered like the garden of the LORD. The cause of the war takes two lines, twelve years of tribute, rebellion in the thirteenth year, and the army back in the fourteenth.

Chedorlaomer is named alone here, so the five cities owed their tribute to the king of Elam, a land far to the east beyond Babylon. Adam Clarke reads the revolt as a bid to recover their liberty after twelve years of servitude. Elam's reach ran to the Jordan.
