Commentary
2 notes on this verseThen I separated twelve of the chief of the priests,.... That were in company with him; so that it seems there were more than the two mentioned, Ezr 8:2, very probably their families, or some of their brethren, were with them: Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them; these men named were Levites, and not priests, Ezr 8:18 and therefore the copulative "and" must be supplied: and Sherebiah, &c. or with the twelve priests, Sherebiah, &c. and ten Levites more with them; so that the number of priests and Levites were equal, and in all twenty four.

twelve of the chief of the priests
on Ezra 8:24-27
Twelve of the chief priests, Sherebiah and Hashabiah among them, are separated with ten of their brethren, an appointed watch over the treasure before a single mile is covered. Ezra weighs into their hands six hundred and fifty talents of silver, a hundred talents of silver vessels, a hundred talents of gold, twenty gold basins worth a thousand darics, and two vessels of fine copper valued as gold. The sum is written down before it is carried anywhere, an inventory made at the point of transfer rather than left to memory.
