on Ezekiel 45:18-20
The sacred year opens on the first day of the first month with a young bull's blood on the doorposts of the temple. The rite is repeated on the seventh day “for anyone who strays unintentionally or in ignorance.” Keil sets it beside the altar's consecration in Exodus and Leviticus.

Blood on the doorposts recalls the Passover of Exodus 12:7, and this cleansing falls in the same month as that feast. Gill reads it as an emblem of Christ's blood. Matthew Henry commends beginning the year with renewed repentance, as Hezekiah did in 2 Chronicles 29.
