Seventy is the number Genesis 46:27 gives for the household that went down, and Stephen says threescore and fifteen at Acts 7:14, following the Septuagint, which counts further descendants of Joseph. The Hebrew text and the Greek text differ here and both readings have long been held. Genesis closes with Joseph in a coffin in Egypt, and this verse reports the rest of that generation gone with him, which is how a family with standing at court becomes a people with none.

Now Joseph and all his brothers
Joseph, all his brothers and the whole generation that came down with Jacob died. With them went the living memory of what Joseph had done for Egypt, which prepares for the new king of verse 8. John Calvin reads the verse as marking the beginning of the change, and holds that until then the Israelites had been treated kindly and lived in peace as guests.
