The king reads “all the days of his life”, so that he may learn to fear the LORD. Verse 20 adds that “his heart will not be exalted above his countrymen”. The throne stands under the same book as the man in the field.

The promise reaches past the king to his sons, and Adam Clarke infers that the crown of Israel was meant to be hereditary. Psalm 132:12 sets the same condition on David's throne, that his sons keep the covenant if their sons are to reign after them.
