St. Jerome, Commentary on Daniel, CHAPTER TWO · Written before 420.

Verse 39. "And after thee there shall arise another empire inferior to thee, made of silver." (The Vulgate LXX does not include "made of silver.") That is to say, the empire of the Medes and Persians, which bears a resemblance to silver, being inferior to the preceding empire, and superior to that which is to follow. "And a third empire of bronze (the Vulgate LXX has "made of copper"), which shall rule over the entire earth." This signifies the Alexandrian empire, and that of the Macedonians, and of Alexander's successors.

The traditional line, the site's own tradition among them, reads the silver kingdom inferior to Babylon as Medo-Persia, the brass bearing rule over all the earth as Greece, and the fourth kingdom strong as iron as Rome, a line argued at length by Pusey and defended against Porphyry's late dating by Jerome; a critical reading holds the fourth kingdom terminates in the divided Hellenistic empires after Alexander, the Greek-terminus line named here with its holders rather than erased. The feet's iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men but not cleave one to another, is read across both lines as a divided final state, strong in parts and brittle at the joints, whichever kingdoms the reader assigns to it.

That Medo-Persia is the second kingdom appears from Da 5:28 and Da 8:20. Isa 21:2. inferior--"The kings of Persia were the worst race of men that ever governed an empire" [PRIDEAUX].
