And over them only: was seven years and six months; to which being added thirty three years he reigned over all Israel in Jerusalem, made forty years and six months; and which, for the roundness of the number, is usually called forty years. See 2Sa 5:4.

Ish-bosheth is forty years old when he begins to reign and reigns two years, while David reigns over Judah seven years and six months. The verse states both numbers and does not explain the five and a half years between them.

John Gill adds the thirty-three years David later reigned over all Israel in Jerusalem. The sum is forty years and six months. Scripture rounds it to forty at 5:4.
