Even the merciful need mercy; and they shall obtain it. [2.] God's uprightness, his justice and faithfulness, will be the joy of those that are upright, just, and faithful, both towards God and man. [3.] God's purity and holiness will be the joy of those that are pure and holy, who therefore give thanks at the remembrance thereof.

God shows Himself faithful to the faithful and pure to the pure, “but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd”. John Gill ties the wording to its parallel in Psalm 18. The section closes with “You save an afflicted people”, while God’s eyes are on the haughty.

God saves an afflicted people. John Gill reads the verse with Psalm 18:27, where the haughty eyes belong to the proud; in Samuel the eyes are those of God. Hannah's song sets the same reversal at 1 Samuel 2:7-8, and Isaiah 2:11 carries it into the prophets.
