Thunder, arrows and lightning become the LORD’s weapons. “The channels of the sea appeared”, and the foundations of the world lay bare “at the rebuke of the LORD”. The song builds the scene from words Israel already kept for God in the storm and at the sea of the exodus.

John Gill reads this with Psalm 18:13, where the line closes with hailstones and coals of fire. The Samuel copy ends at the voice. Thunder is the voice of God across the Psalter, as Psalm 29:3 shows.
